Wedding venues in the Basque hills, from Sare to Bidarray
Farmhouse estates under La Rhune that sleep the guest list, a Michelin-starred inn in Ainhoa, and a 1665 farm in Bidarray. Inland venues a 20- to 45-minute drive from Biarritz.
Published Updated

The Basque countryside wedding venues closest to Biarritz are in the Labourd villages under La Rhune, 20 to 30 kilometres inland, 25 to 35 minutes by car. Au Milieu des Fougères in Sare seats 180 and sleeps 54, Maison Olhabidea in Sare seats 80, and Ostapé in Bidarray, deeper in the hills, seats 200 to 250 with 22 suites on the estate.
These are the venues for couples who want white farmhouses, red shutters and the Pyrenees in the photographs, and who are happy for the ocean to be a day trip. The closer hill estates around Arcangues and Bidart, Gaztelur and Bassilour among them, are in wedding venues in Biarritz. This guide goes further in. Capacities and prices come from Bridebook listings unless stated, as of 2026. Ithurria’s room count and star come from the Michelin Guide.
Why go inland
Two things change when you leave the coast.
Guests sleep on site, and the rooms come with the fee. Hill estates were built as farms, with barns and outbuildings that now hold rooms. A guest list of 60 can sleep on one property, and the two largest estates below include that accommodation in the venue fee. On the coast, the same list usually needs a hotel, billed separately.
The light is different. The villages sit in green valleys under La Rhune, the 905-metre mountain on the French-Spanish border. Evening light falls across the hills.
The trade is distance. Every guest needs a car or a coach, and the nearest town for a late drink is a drive away. The budget effect is set out in what a Basque coast wedding costs.
Sare, under La Rhune
Sare is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, a label for small rural villages with protected heritage. It sits at the foot of La Rhune. The rack railway to the summit leaves from the Col de Saint-Ignace, just outside the village, and runs seasonally.
Au Milieu des Fougères
A restored 17th-century Labourdin farmhouse, about 20 kilometres from Biarritz, about 25 to 35 minutes by car. The listing gives 280 square metres of air-conditioned rooms for up to 180 seated guests, a 350 square metre terrace for the cocktail or an outdoor ceremony, a wooded park and a pelota fronton. Accommodation is 18 rooms with 54 beds, across 8 apartments and 2 suites. The whole estate can be privatised.
Venue hire is listed at 9,900 to 13,900 EUR. That includes exclusive use, set-up the evening before, rooms for the couple and guests, and tables, chairs and benches. Catering is separate.
Maison Olhabidea
A house in a large garden, with 5 guest rooms, a library and a fireside lounge. The dining room seats up to 80, and a marquee in the garden takes larger numbers. Exclusive use is offered. Pricing is on request.
At 5 rooms, Olhabidea sleeps the couple and close family. The rest of the guests stay in Sare, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle or back on the coast.
Ainhoa, for the small wedding
Ainhoa is a single street of white Labourdin houses near the Spanish border, also one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.
Hôtel Ithurria
A 17th-century Labourdin house and a former stop on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. The Michelin Guide lists 26 rooms, a fine-dining restaurant with a Michelin star under chef Xavier Isabal, a bistro, and a pool with mountain views. The family has owned it since the 1960s. Its wedding listing describes event rooms suited to about 50 guests.
Ithurria is the choice for a wedding of 30 to 50 where dinner is the centre of the day. The cooking is the draw, and most guests can sleep in the building.
Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, for the big guest list
Saint-Pée sits between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Espelette, on the Nivelle river, about 15 minutes from the coast.
La Ferme aux Piments
A farm property with views toward La Rhune and two reception rooms. The listing gives La Salle at up to 140 seated and La Bergerie at up to 300 seated, with a terrace, gardens, a dance floor and room for a marquee. It is available for exclusive use, with on-site parking. Pricing is on request.
This is the inland answer for 200 guests or more. Accommodation is not on site, so plan a hotel block on the coast and a coach.
Bidarray, deeper in the hills
Ostapé
The furthest venue in this guide and the most self-contained. The estate covers 45 hectares around a restored farm dating from 1665. The listing gives 22 suites in five villas, with 52 beds, and up to 68 guests sleeping on site. The Les Écuries room seats up to 250 for dinner, with a dance floor and a bar. The estate has its own restaurant, Lore Ttipia.
Venue hire is listed at 5,700 to 10,000 EUR, including accommodation for the couple and guests, with a coordinator on the day. Bidarray is about 45 minutes from Biarritz airport. Guests arrive on Friday and do not leave until Sunday, which is why you book the whole weekend.
Ceremonies and the Basque touch
A countryside venue is a symbolic ceremony venue. The legal French marriage takes place at a mairie, under residence rules that most visiting couples cannot meet. The ceremony on the terrace, the lawn or the fronton is yours to design. The rules are in marrying on both sides of the border. Why a beach ceremony is harder is in can you get married on the beach in Biarritz.
The hill villages are where Basque customs feel most natural. An aurresku dancer at the ceremony exit, Irouléguy on the table and a gâteau basque instead of a tiered cake all belong here. The options are in Basque wedding traditions and what to serve.
How to choose
Start with how many guests must sleep on site.
- Up to 50, dinner first: Hôtel Ithurria, Ainhoa.
- Up to 80, house and garden: Maison Olhabidea, Sare, with a hotel block nearby.
- Up to 180, everyone together: Au Milieu des Fougères, Sare, sleeping 54.

June and September give the long evenings and the green hills. The calendar is in best months for a Basque coast wedding.
When you write to us, say how many guests need a bed on site and how far from the sea you are willing to go.
