June, the reliable start

Rain falls on roughly 8 to 10 days across the month on both sides of the border, about the same as every other month, so a wet-weather plan still matters. Hotels are easier to book than July or August, and the town has not yet filled with its own summer visitors. Most wedding professionals on this coast name June as the safest opening month of the season.

July, watch the Bayonne calendar

Temperatures climb toward the low 20s and the water follows, averaging close to 21.5°C by month’s end. The complication is not weather but crowds. The Fêtes de Bayonne, one of the largest festivals in France by attendance, runs July 15 to 19 in 2026, drawing close to a million visitors into Bayonne, about 7 kilometres from Biarritz. Hotels across the wider area fill, taxis get scarce, and roads slow for the five days, even for a wedding with no connection to the festival. Couples who love the idea can lean into it. Most simply pick a date outside that window.

August, the hottest and busiest

August is the warmest month on record for both towns, with Biarritz averaging a high of 23.6°C and the sea at its yearly peak of about 22.2°C. San Sebastián adds its own complication: Semana Grande, the city’s Aste Nagusia festival, runs August 8 to 15 in 2026, with nightly fireworks competitions over the bay that draw large crowds to the waterfront. A wedding timed around the fireworks can be spectacular. A wedding that needs quiet streets should look at a different week.

September, the local’s pick

September holds most of August’s warmth, Biarritz averages 22°C, San Sebastián 20.9°C, with water still near 21°C, while the crowds thin once French and Spanish schools reopen after the first week. The exception is San Sebastián’s International Film Festival, scheduled for September 18 to 26 in 2026, which fills the city’s hotels and pushes up rates for that specific week. A wedding in the first two weeks of September, or the last days of the month, avoids it. Many planners on this coast quietly prefer September to any other month, for exactly this mix of warmth and calm.

May and October, the shoulder months

Both months run 4 to 5 degrees cooler than the summer peak, with about 10 rainy days each across the two towns. They also cost less and book more easily, often with only a few months’ notice instead of a year. May suits a garden ceremony that does not depend on swimming. October can be strikingly clear on this coast, with long golden light in the afternoon, though a backup indoor plan is worth having by mid-month.

November to April, the off season

Rain is heaviest in November on both sides of the border, and daylight is short. This is the range for a genuinely indoor wedding: a hotel ballroom, a restaurant private room, a fireplace instead of a garden. Venue and catering rates drop, and the properties that are booked a year out in June will often answer within days in February. It is not the wedding with a beach walk at golden hour. It can still be a very good wedding.
