Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz sits in a protected bay, which is why the light is softer here than on the exposed beaches to the north. The old town is low, tiled, and built around fishing — Louis XIV married Maria Theresa here in 1660, and the church still shows the galleries where the town once sat. It is smaller than Biarritz, more concentrated, and often the better fit for a wedding that wants Basque character without a resort atmosphere.

Venue types

Harbour and bay restaurants

Rooms above the port or looking at the bay. Best for dinners of 40–80, seafood, and guests who will wander the town after midnight.

Townhouses and private palaces

A handful of maisons de maître and historic houses in and just behind the centre. Intimate, photogenic, and limited in capacity — ask early.

Ciboure and the Nivelle

Across the bridge, or a few minutes upriver: quieter gardens, some with a view back to the bay. A good compromise when the town itself is fully booked.

Best months

Late May through June, and September, when the bay is swimmable and the town has not yet (or has just) emptied of August. April can be bright and sharp. Winter weddings work in heated rooms; the bay is still handsome in rain.

Nearest airport

Biarritz-Pays Basque (BIQ) is about 20 minutes north. San Sebastián airport (EAS) is roughly the same time south, which makes Saint-Jean-de-Luz a practical midpoint for a Franco-Spanish guest list. Hendaye and Irun stations sit on the border for trains from Paris (via TGV to Hendaye) and from Madrid or Barcelona.
