What a Basque coast wedding actually costs
Realistic budget ranges for destination weddings on the French and Spanish Basque coast, from an intimate harbour dinner to a 150-person weekend.
Published Updated
Couples arrive with a number from another country and a photograph from this one. The two rarely meet. A Basque coast wedding is not cheap because the rooms, the cooks, and the weekends are in demand from Biarritz to San Sebastián. It is also not automatically extravagant. The range below is what we see in 2026 conversations, in euros, for a destination weekend rather than a town-hall lunch.
These are not quotes. Vendors price the room, the month, and the day of the week. Saturday in August is a different product from Thursday in May.
Under 30k€
This is a restaurant, a private dining room, or a small house, usually under 40 guests. Think Saint-Jean-de-Luz harbour, a Hondarribia marina lunch, or a caserío that already has a kitchen. You will not take over a palace hotel. You may have the better wedding.
Hotels are booked by guests themselves. There is little production: flowers from a town florist, a playlist, a civil ceremony on a different morning. The risk is trying to stretch this budget over 80 people. It shows.
30–60k€
The most common conversation. A villa or a mid-size venue, 50 to 90 guests, a seated dinner, a planner who is local rather than flying in. Wine can be excellent at this level if you drink the region — Irouléguy, Txakoli, a serious Rioja — instead of importing a Bordeaux list.
This is also where couples overspend on photography and underspend on the room. The Atlantic does a lot of the looking. Put the money into a kitchen that can cook for the number you actually invited.
60–100k€
A hotel ballroom or a full house takeover, 80 to 140 guests, a rehearsal dinner, perhaps a day-after lunch. You can have a ceremony on the property and a dinner that does not feel hired. Planners at this level coordinate civil paperwork, guest hotels, and the bits that break: coaches, weather, a priest who only speaks Basque.
San Sebastián gastronomic rooms appear here if the list is smaller and the dinner is the point. A starred kitchen closing for 40 people can consume a surprising share of a 80k€ envelope. Worth it if that is the wedding.
100k€ and above
Palace hotels, multi-day programmes, production, and the staff to hold 150 or 200 people without the day fraying. This is Biarritz seafront or the Concha, with a planner who has done it before on this coast. The budget is not only the Saturday. It is the Thursday welcome, the Friday lunch, the Sunday recovery, and the rooms you hold so that guests are not hunting Booking.com in August.
If you are here, say so in the first email. The shortlist is different.
What moves the number
Month, day of week, and guest count move the quote more than France versus Spain. Catering per head on this coast is not Paris, and it is not a barn in the Loire. Ask for the minimum spend in writing. Ask what happens if it rains. Ask whether the wine package is drinkable.
Then tell us the range you actually have. We will not introduce a house that needs twice that to feel like itself.
Questions we are asked
Is a Spanish Basque wedding cheaper than a French one?
Not reliably. Hotel palaces in San Sebastián can match or exceed Biarritz. Where Spain often costs less is in some rural houses, certain caterers, and the absence of a French traiteur prestige premium. Compare rooms, not countries.
What is a sensible minimum for 80 guests?
Plan from 60k€ if you want a proper venue, a seated dinner, wine that can stand the food, and two nights of hotels for the close family. Under 30k€ is possible for a restaurant takeover and a short guest list that books its own rooms.
Do couples pay Basque Coast Weddings a fee?
No. The introduction is free. Some venues and planners pay a referral fee if you book after we introduce you. It is not added to your quote.
